Blog Spotlight: Two Peas in a Blog

Two Peas in a Blog, Columbus fashion blog

Two Peas in a Blog is a lifestyle and fashion blog that is half-based in Columbus. The authors behind the site are twin sisters: Katey and Betsy. Katey lives in Columbus, while Betsy lives in Raleigh, NC. Distance, however, does not keep them from collaborating and sharing their favorite looks, style tips and more together in one place. We asked Katey what it's like to work with her sister long-distance, how she finds inspiration and her best style advice. See what she had to say:

What made you decide to start blogging?

We've always had a love for fashion. I can remember back in high school trying on clothes in the evening to find the perfect outfit to wear to school the next day. For a couple years before deciding to make the leap into blogging, Betsy and I loved following fashion blogs and being inspired. Along with that, we would talk on the phone numerous times a day, sharing fashion pieces we had just found or sending pictures of items we were loving. We decided it would be fun to start sharing those together through a blog.

What advice would you give to someone just starting a lifestyle or fashion blog?

My number one piece of advice is to be confident! I can remember sharing with a few friends the idea that Betsy and I were going to start a blog and getting mixed responses of "why?" and "that's silly." It wasn't silly to us! It's our passion! We continued on and have worked really hard to make Twopeasinablog a successful brand. Not everyone is going to agree with what or how you do things. If you are confident, it shows!

My other piece of advice, which is just as important, is to stay consistent! Not only to your individual style, but with your posting schedule. Having a consistency to your posts really helps when you are trying to grow an audience.

Where do you find inspiration for your posts?

All over! We are constantly searching sites, browsing stores, and getting inspired from other bloggers. From there we work with the current season or upcoming holidays and love to post about seasonal trends, classic favorites that are always on trend, and current items we are loving.

Do you have a favorite post - or one you're particularly proud of?

Picking a favorite post is tough! If I had to pick one, it would be when we turned 40 this past summer and shared 40 random facts about ourselves. (You can read the post here.) At first, we weren't sure if we should share our age as it might turn away some younger people. However, one goal of ours is to always be open and forthcoming. Fashion shouldn't be limited to a certain age!

How do you coordinate your posts, living in different cities?

Being in two different cities so far away can be tricky. However, we talk multiple times a day! We try to map out a couple weeks in advance to have an idea of where we are headed. However, we have a habit of throwing together a post depending on something new we've just found or a hot topic that is on our mind. Our typical weekly schedule lately is to each do a blog post, share a more day-to-day (or Instagram) look in a post one or two days, and then our Seven on Saturday post every Saturday. In addition to that, we post one to two looks to Instagram every day.

How would you describe your personal style?

Our typical styles are pretty similar. We are both jeans girls at heart! Give us a pretty statement top to wear with jeans any day and we'd be happy! I would describe our style as dressy casual. What is neat about our different locations, is what it brings to our individual styles. Betsy has lived down South for so long, she loves wearing those classic Southern styles like gingham and seersucker. She incorporates those into her looks from time to time. Whereas, I tend to lean towards classics with a trendy touch.

What is the best piece of style advice you've ever received?

Hmm. The best style advice we have is to follow the 'Rule of 3'. For example, a simple dress can be a cute throw-on-and-go look. However, by adding a statement necklace and a belt or hat, you've created an outfit that will have you feeling more put together just by adding an extra element or two to your look. Think of your base layer (dress, shorts and a tank, jeans and sweater) as your number one. Then add a couple more elements (necklace, statement earrings, belt, scarf, hat, vest, cardigan, etc.) to complete your look!
