Blog Spotlight: Jewels with Style

Columbus fashion blog, Jewels with Style

Monica Warren is a Columbus-based wardrobe stylist, ebook author, and the blogger behind Jewels with Style. To say she is busy is an understatement, but she was still kind enough to make time to chat with us! See what Warren had to say about blogging, inspiration, and style advice below:

You've been blogging for quite some time. What made you decide to start blogging?

I started blogging because I’ve always loved writing and fashion. I had a 9-to-5 job that had nothing to do with writing or fashion, so I figured it would be the perfect creative outlet for me. The women I know would always ask me fashion advice, so I figured I would share my knowledge with the world and help women learn how to dress their best.

What advice would you give to someone just starting a lifestyle or fashion blog?

The advice I would give is:

  1. Be prepared to make investments in your blog, specifically with your time. If you want you blog to succeed it will require a lot of your personal time, and you may also have to invest financially in some photography equipment (people like good pictures!)
  2. Know someone who’s tech savvy or take some time to learn about how to set up your website. When I started the blog I had already made a website before so it wasn’t as hard, but I still had to research and read up on tips and tricks to give my website the right look. The little details of your website are so important.
  3. Set goals! Be clear about what the goal of your blog will be and set time frames for each goal.

Where do you find inspiration for your posts?

I get a lot of inspiration from magazines, popular trends and also from my customers and from ladies in the Facebook group. I really want to post what people want to learn about, so I'm always taking feedback from readers

You founded a Facebook group for women to discuss fashion and style tips. What made you start that group?

I started the Facebook group because I saw that a lot of fashion groups on Facebook concentrated on celebrity fashion or just pictures of cute clothes, but very few were actually helping women to improve their own personal style. I wanted a group where women would feel comfortable taking about real life style issues they face every day, not just what was on the red carpet. I’m really proud of it because we discuss the common style struggles of working moms, stay-at-home moms, career women, etc. and as a group we provide easy solutions that will ultimately upgrade their style and help them feel more confident in their clothes.

How would you describe your personal style?

I describe my style as eclectic chic. My style is a mix between Solange and Olivia Palermo. I like classic pieces, but I always add a surprising sense of style to each outfit.

What is the best piece of style advice you've ever received?

Take one accessory off before you leave the house. This is so true, I see a lot of people overdo accessories, which can ruin the whole look. And my mom always told me to wear a slip with skirts and dresses that have thin fabrics (no one wants to see your underwear.) ;)
