Bridal Designer Specializes in Unique Looks

Melissa Koch Bridal, Columbus, Ohio

Melissa Koch is a Columbus-based bridal designer with a background that includes a fashion design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Koch answered some questions for us about making a career out of fashion design, building a company in Columbus, and finding personal style.

What made you choose fashion design as a career? Was there a particular defining moment, or was in a culmination of a few different factors?

I think the most defining moment that made me interested in the industry was Balenciaga's SS07 collection when they debuted the robot legging. It was at that instant that I recognized how utility and art could be mixed. I've loved fashion since I was 10 years old and never get tired of it.

Do you have a favorite design - or maybe one that has an interesting story behind it you would be willing to share?

My latest collection was inspired by The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman.  It's a nontraditional fairytale with beautiful illustrations that I incorporated into the embroidery in my designs. I dress the nontraditional bride, so it makes sense to fall in love with a twisted fairytale.

What made you decide to base your company in Columbus?

I work full time in Columbus and found love here. I plan to stay for as long as possible and to support some of the creative organizations here such as Fashion Week Columbus and Wild Goose Creative.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a fashion design career?

You have to be prepared to work hard while kindling a creative flame.  It is not easy, and only the truly passionate survive.

How would you describe your personal style?

I'm a minimalist who likes clean-cut clothing and somewhat androgynous silhouettes. I prefer that my clothing be sustainably made, so quality versus quantity is a key factor in my wardrobe.

What is the best piece of style advice you've ever received?

Invest in fur. I used to live in Los Angeles, and this tip saved me my first few winters here.
