Brittany's Beauty Box, a local mobile and online boutique, began from the founder's need to find work- and age-appropriate clothing that wasn't easy to snag at the mall. With a background in retail and a passion for style, Brittany decided to develop a boutique that could help women with the same fashion needs in a way that's most convenient to them. She was kind enough to answer some questions for us about opening a boutique, running a business in Columbus, and her favorite style advice. See what she had to say below:
What made you decide to open Brittany's Beauty Box?
Brittany’s Beauty Box started as a handmade pop-up and Etsy shop selling crochet hats and hand-sewn headbands. After a year of being in business, I decided to add on retail clothing and transition into selling handmade jewelry and accessories from other artisans. I love clothing and have nearly ten years of retail experience. Adding on clothing was an additional way for me to have fun styling women.
Why did you decide to open your boutique in the form of a truck (rather than a brick-and-mortar or online-only store)?
I decided to open my boutique in the form of a truck because as a busy woman I desire convenience, and I wanted to be able to meet women where they are: at festivals, pop-ups, their homes and other events. Also, after attending festivals in a tent for a summer, I was ready to have some additional protection from the elements!
What advice would you give someone starting a fashion-related business in Columbus?
I would advise them to be very specific on your market. You need to be able to describe who your ideal customer is, what they like to do, and their lifestyle.
What do you see in the future for Brittany's Beauty Box?
In the future, I would like to open a brick-and-mortar store while still doing pop-ups.
What's the best style advice you've ever received?
The best style advice I’ve received is to be yourself. Don’t follow rules. Do what your heart desires and express yourself!
